Everything you need to know about the HPV vaccine
Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is one of the most common sexually transmitted infections. There are over 200 types of HPV, and while most are harmless, some high-risk strains can cause cervical cancer, anal cancer, throat cancer, penile cancer, and genital warts. Around 80% of people will be infected with HPV at some point in their lives.
Gardasil 9 is the most advanced HPV vaccine available. It protects against 9 types of HPV: types 6, 11, 16, 18, 31, 33, 45, 52 and 58. These strains are responsible for the majority of HPV-related cancers and genital warts. It is approved for use in individuals aged 9 to 45.
The HPV vaccine is recommended for both men and women aged 9–45. It is most effective when given before any exposure to HPV, which is why it's ideally given to younger individuals. However, adults who haven't been vaccinated can still benefit significantly. If you've already been exposed to some HPV strains, the vaccine can still protect you against the other strains you haven't encountered.
For individuals aged 15 and over, a 2-dose schedule is standard, with the second dose given 6 to 12 months after the first. For those aged 9–14, a single dose may be sufficient based on current guidance. Our pharmacist will advise you on the correct schedule during your appointment.
The HPV vaccine is very safe and well-tolerated. The most common side effects are mild and temporary, including soreness, redness or swelling at the injection site, headache, and occasionally mild fever. Serious side effects are extremely rare. You will be observed for a short period after vaccination as a precaution.
Yes, the vaccine can still be beneficial even if you've had a previous HPV infection. Since Gardasil 9 protects against 9 different HPV strains, it's unlikely you've been exposed to all of them. The vaccine will help protect you against the strains you haven't yet encountered.
No, you do not need a GP referral to get the HPV vaccine at Kings Pharmacy. Simply book your appointment online and our qualified pharmacists will handle everything, including a brief health screening before administering the vaccine.
The NHS offers the HPV vaccine free of charge to children aged 12–13 as part of the school vaccination programme. However, if you missed it or are outside the NHS eligibility criteria, you can get vaccinated privately at Kings Pharmacy. This is a convenient and affordable way to get protected.
