Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about Nitrofurantoin (Macrobid)

Macrobid is a brand name for nitrofurantoin, an antibiotic used to treat and prevent urinary tract infections (UTIs). It is specifically effective against certain types of bacteria that commonly cause UTIs.

Nitrofurantoin works by killing the bacteria that cause the infection. It concentrates in the urine, making it highly effective for treating infections in the urinary tract.

Take the capsules exactly as prescribed by your clinician. Usually, it is taken twice a day with food or milk to improve absorption and reduce stomach upset. Swallow the capsule whole; do not crush or chew it.

If you forget to take a dose, take it as soon as you remember, unless it is nearly time for your next dose. Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten one.

Common side effects may include nausea, headache, and flatulence. Your urine may turn dark yellow or brown, which is a harmless effect of the medication.

Serious side effects are rare but can happen. Stop taking Macrobid and seek medical attention immediately if you experience signs of an allergic reaction (such as wheezing, swelling of the face or throat, or a severe rash), severe lung problems (fever, chills, cough, chest pain, shortness of breath), or symptoms of liver problems (yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine).

Some medications can interact with Macrobid. It is important to tell your prescriber about all the medicines you are taking. In particular, antacids containing magnesium can reduce the absorption of Macrobid, and certain gout medications (like probenecid) may affect how it works.

Macrobid may not be suitable for everyone. It should not be taken if you have severe kidney problems, porphyria, or G6PD deficiency. It is also generally avoided during the final stages of pregnancy (labour and delivery) and while breastfeeding if the baby has G6PD deficiency.

Yes, you can drink alcohol in moderation while taking Macrobid. Alcohol does not directly interact with the medication, but excessive drinking may worsen side effects like nausea or dizziness and can delay your recovery.

You should start to feel better within a few days of starting treatment. However, it is important to complete the full course of antibiotics even if you feel better, to ensure the infection is completely cleared.

If you experience side effects that are severe, persistent, or bothersome, stop taking the medication and contact your doctor or pharmacist for advice.

Store Macrobid capsules in their original packaging to protect them from light and moisture. Keep them in a cool, dry place where the temperature stays below 25°C, and ensure they are out of sight and reach of children.

Yes, simple lifestyle changes can help prevent UTIs. These include drinking plenty of water to flush out bacteria, wiping from front to back after using the toilet, emptying your bladder soon after sex, and avoiding perfumed bubble baths or soaps that can irritate the area.
