Frequently asked questions

What is Maxalt and how does it work?

Maxalt is a medication used to treat migraines. It works by narrowing blood vessels around the brain and reducing inflammation, which helps to relieve symptoms like headache, nausea, and sensitivity to light and sound.

Take Maxalt as soon as you notice the first signs of a migraine. It is most effective when taken early, but it can still provide relief even if taken later during a migraine attack. Do not take it for other types of headaches.

Maxalt typically begins to relieve migraine symptoms within 30 to 60 minutes of taking it. If the migraine returns or isn't fully relieved, a second dose can be taken, but not more than two doses in 24 hours.

Maxalt may interact with certain medications, so it's important to inform your healthcare provider about all the medications you're taking, including over-the-counter drugs, vitamins, and supplements. Avoid taking Maxalt if you've used another triptan or ergotamine-containing medication within the past 24 hours.

Common side effects include dizziness, drowsiness, fatigue, and dry mouth. These are usually mild and temporary. If you experience severe side effects like chest pain, shortness of breath, or irregular heartbeat, seek medical attention immediately.

Maxalt is intended for the acute treatment of migraines and should not be used as a preventative treatment. If you experience frequent migraines, consult your doctor for a long-term management plan.

The safety of Maxalt during pregnancy or breastfeeding is not fully established. If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, discuss with your healthcare provider before using this medication.

If Maxalt does not relieve your migraine or if your migraines become more frequent or severe, consult your healthcare provider. They may need to adjust your treatment plan or explore other medication options.

Store Maxalt at room temperature, away from moisture, heat, and light. Keep it out of reach of children and pets.

Maxalt may cause drowsiness or dizziness, so it’s advisable to avoid driving or operating heavy machinery until you know how the medication affects you. If you experience these side effects, wait until they subside before engaging in such activities.
