Frequently asked questions

What is atovaquone/proguanil?

Atovaquone/proguanil, sold under the brand name Malarone, is a combination medication used to prevent and treat malaria. It contains two active ingredients, atovaquone and proguanil, which work together to inhibit the growth and reproduction of malaria parasites.

Start taking atovaquone/proguanil 1-2 days before entering a malaria-endemic area, continue daily during your stay, and for 7 days after leaving the area. Take the medication with food or a milky drink to enhance absorption.

Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, headache, and dizziness. These side effects are usually mild and temporary. Contact your healthcare provider if you experience severe side effects or signs of an allergic reaction.

Yes, atovaquone/proguanil can interact with other medications, such as certain antibiotics and anticoagulants. Inform your healthcare provider about all medications and supplements you are taking to avoid potential interactions.

Avoid alcohol as it can increase the risk of side effects. Inform your doctor if you have kidney or liver issues, as this may affect how you should use the medication. Ensure consistent daily dosing for effective malaria prevention.

Consult your healthcare provider before using atovaquone/proguanil if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Your doctor will weigh the potential risks and benefits to determine if it is appropriate for your situation. Unfortunately we cannot supply to breastfeeding or pregnant women through our service.

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for the missed one.

Store atovaquone/proguanil at room temperature, away from moisture and heat. Keep it out of reach of children and do not use it past its expiration date.

Atovaquone/proguanil can be used for children, but the dosage is based on weight. Consult your healthcare provider for the appropriate dosage and usage instructions for children. Unfortunately we cannot supply this medication to patients under 18 on our service.
