Norethisterone is a synthetic hormone that can delay periods by mimicking the effects of natural progesterone. By maintaining high levels of progesterone, it prevents the uterine lining from shedding. Patients typically start taking norethisterone three days before their expected period. It is taken three times daily for up to 10-14 days. Once the medication is stopped, menstruation usually begins within 2-3 days.
