Frequently asked questions

What is azithromycin?

Azithromycin is an antibiotic used to treat a variety of bacterial infections, including chlamydia. It works by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis, effectively stopping the growth and reproduction of the bacteria Chlamydia trachomatis.

For chlamydia, azithromycin is typically prescribed as a single dose of 1 gram, taken orally. Follow your healthcare provider’s instructions carefully. Do not take more or less than prescribed, and complete the full dose even if you start feeling better.

Common side effects may include nausea, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and headache. These are usually mild and temporary. Contact your doctor if you experience severe side effects such as severe abdominal pain, persistent diarrhea, or signs of an allergic reaction like rash or difficulty breathing.

Azithromycin can interact with other medications, including certain heart medications and blood thinners. Inform your healthcare provider about all other medications and supplements you are taking to avoid potential interactions.

Avoid taking antacids containing aluminum or magnesium within 2 hours of taking azithromycin, as they can reduce its effectiveness. If you have liver or kidney issues, inform your doctor, as this may affect how you should use the medication.

Since azithromycin for chlamydia is usually prescribed as a single dose, missing a dose is not applicable. If you have any concerns or missed other doses in a different context, consult your healthcare provider for guidance.

Store azithromycin tablets at room temperature, away from moisture and heat. Keep them out of reach of children and do not use them past their expiration date.
