Frequently asked questions

What is Calpol used for?

Calpol is used to relieve mild to moderate pain and reduce fever in babies and children. It is commonly used for teething pain, headaches, sore throat, earache, and fever associated with colds, flu, and childhood infections.

Calpol contains paracetamol, which helps to reduce pain and lower body temperature when a child has a fever.

Calpol is suitable for babies and children from the age stated on the product packaging. Different Calpol products are available for different age ranges, so always check the label before use.

Calpol should be given using the dosing syringe supplied, following the dose instructions based on your child’s age and weight as shown on the label or in the patient information leaflet.

Doses should be spaced at least 4 hours apart, and no more than the maximum number of doses stated on the packaging should be given in 24 hours.

Do not give Calpol with other medicines that contain paracetamol. If your child is taking other medicines, check with a pharmacist or healthcare professional first.

Side effects are rare when Calpol is used as directed. If your child develops a rash, breathing difficulties, or any unusual symptoms, stop using the medicine and seek medical advice.

If pain or fever persists for more than a few days, worsens, or if your child is under 3 months old with a fever, seek medical advice promptly.

No, Calpol is available without a prescription.
