Frequently asked questions

What is Duraphat Toothpaste used for?

Duraphat is a prescription-strength fluoride toothpaste used to help prevent and treat tooth decay in people at increased risk of developing dental caries.

Duraphat 5000ppm contains a higher concentration of fluoride than Duraphat 2800ppm. The appropriate strength depends on factors including your age, dental history, risk of tooth decay and previous advice from a dentist or prescriber.

Select the strength previously recommended by your dentist where possible. The information supplied in your assessment will be reviewed before treatment is approved. The prescriber may contact you or recommend a different option if your selection is unsuitable.

Duraphat 2800ppm is normally used twice daily, morning and evening. Duraphat 5000ppm is normally used three times daily, preferably after meals. Follow the directions provided by your dentist, prescriber and patient information leaflet.

Yes. Duraphat should normally be used instead of your usual toothpaste while prescribed. Do not use additional high-fluoride products unless advised by a dental or healthcare professional.

Spit out the toothpaste after brushing and do not swallow it. For Duraphat 2800ppm, do not rinse, eat or drink for 30 minutes after brushing. Follow the instructions supplied with your selected strength.

Duraphat 2800ppm must not be used by children under 10 years of age. Duraphat 5000ppm must not be used by anyone under 16 years of age. Kings Pharmacy Online will supply treatment only where the assessment confirms it is appropriate.

Tell the prescriber if you are pregnant, may be pregnant or are breastfeeding. The suitability guidance differs between the two strengths, so treatment should be individually assessed before it is supplied.

Use Duraphat for the length of time recommended by your dentist or prescriber. People at continued risk of tooth decay may be advised to use it regularly, with periodic dental reviews.

No. Duraphat 2800ppm and 5000ppm are prescription-only medicines in the UK. A suitable prescription and clinical assessment are required before they can be supplied.
