Malarone is an antimalarial medication that combines two active ingredients, atovaquone and proguanil, to prevent and treat malaria. It is effective against the Plasmodium parasites that cause malaria.
For prevention, start taking Malarone 1-2 days before entering a malaria-endemic area, continue daily during your stay, and for 7 days after leaving the area. Take it with food or a milky drink to enhance absorption.
Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, headache, and dizziness. These are usually mild and temporary. Contact your healthcare provider if you experience severe side effects or allergic reactions.
Yes, Malarone can interact with other medications, including certain antibiotics and anticoagulants. Inform your healthcare provider about all medications and supplements you are taking to avoid potential interactions.
Avoid alcohol as it can increase the risk of side effects. If you have kidney or liver issues, consult your doctor before using Malarone. It's important to take the medication consistently and not miss doses for effective protection.
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, but if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose. Do not take a double dose to make up for the missed one. Continue with your regular dosing schedule.
Consult your healthcare provider before using Malarone if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Your doctor will weigh the potential risks and benefits to determine if it is appropriate for you. Unfortunately we cannot provide this medication to pregnant or breastfeeding women on our service.
