Frequently asked questions

What is Macrobid?
Macrobid is a brand name for nitrofurantoin, an antibiotic used to treat and prevent urinary tract infections (UTIs). It is specifically effective against certain types of bacteria that commonly cause UTIs.
Macrobid works by interfering with the production of proteins and other essential components within bacteria, leading to their death and helping to clear the infection.
Dosage: Follow your doctor’s prescription. The typical dose is one 100 mg capsule taken twice daily. Duration: It is usually taken for 3 days, depending on the severity of the infection. Complete the full course as prescribed, even if you start to feel better. Administration: Take the medication with food or milk to improve absorption and reduce the risk of stomach upset. Swallow the capsule whole with a full glass of water.
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it’s almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the next one at the regular time. Do not take two doses to make up for the missed one.
Nausea Vomiting Diarrhea Stomach pain Loss of appetite Dark-colored urine (harmless) These side effects are usually mild and temporary.
Serious side effects are rare but can include: Severe allergic reactions (rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, trouble breathing) Lung problems (persistent cough, shortness of breath, chest pain) Liver problems (yellowing of the skin or eyes, severe stomach/abdominal pain, dark urine) Nerve problems (numbness/tingling, muscle weakness) Seek immediate medical attention if you experience any of these symptoms.
Inform your doctor about all medications you are taking, including over-the-counter drugs and supplements. Some medications can interact with Macrobid, including: Magnesium trisilicate-containing antacids Certain antibiotics (e.g., quinolones) Probenecid and sulfinpyrazone (used for gout)
Macrobid may not be suitable if you have: Severe kidney disease A history of liver problems caused by nitrofurantoin A history of lung problems caused by nitrofurantoin Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency Always consult your doctor to ensure Macrobid is safe for you, especially if you have any underlying health conditions.
It is generally safe to drink alcohol in moderation while taking Macrobid. However, alcohol can increase the risk of certain side effects, such as stomach upset and dizziness. Consult your doctor for personalized advice.
You may start to feel better within a few days of starting Macrobid. However, it’s important to complete the full course of treatment to ensure the infection is fully cleared and to prevent antibiotic resistance.
If you experience persistent or bothersome side effects, contact your doctor. They may adjust your dose or recommend an alternative treatment.
Store at room temperature away from moisture and heat. Keep the medication out of reach of children and pets.
Yes, along with taking Macrobid as prescribed, certain lifestyle changes can help prevent future UTIs: Drink plenty of water Urinate frequently and fully empty your bladder Wipe from front to back after using the toilet Avoid using irritating feminine products Wear cotton underwear and loose-fitting clothing Always consult your doctor for personalized advice and before making any significant changes to your lifestyle or medication regimen.
