Frequently asked questions

What is Norethisterone?
Norethisterone is a synthetic form of the hormone progesterone. It is used to treat various menstrual disorders, including delaying periods.
Norethisterone works by mimicking the effects of natural progesterone, helping to maintain the lining of the uterus. By continuing to take Norethisterone, you can prevent the drop in progesterone that triggers menstruation, thereby delaying your period.
Dosage: The typical dose for period delay is 5 mg, taken three times daily. Timing: Start taking Norethisterone three days before your expected period start date. Duration: You can continue taking the tablets once daily for as long as required. Your period should start 2-3 days after you stop taking the medication.
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it’s close to the time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule. Do not take two doses to make up for a missed one.
Nausea Breast tenderness Headache Dizziness Mood changes Bloating Changes in libido These side effects are usually mild and temporary.
Serious side effects are rare but can include: Severe headache or migraine Vision problems Swelling or pain in the legs Chest pain Shortness of breath Seek immediate medical attention if you experience any of these symptoms.
Inform your doctor about all medications you are taking, including over-the-counter drugs and supplements. Some medications can interact with Norethisterone, including: Certain antibiotics (e.g., rifampicin) Antifungal medications (e.g., griseofulvin) Anticonvulsants (e.g., phenytoin) Herbal supplements (e.g., St. John’s Wort)
Norethisterone may not be suitable if you have: A history of blood clots Severe liver disease Breast cancer Undiagnosed vaginal bleeding A history of heart attack or stroke Always consult your doctor to ensure Norethisterone is safe for you, especially if you have any underlying health conditions.
Moderate alcohol consumption is generally safe, but drinking large amounts can increase the risk of side effects and may affect the medication's effectiveness. Always consult your doctor for personalized advice.
Consult your doctor before combining Norethisterone with birth control pills. Your doctor may adjust your birth control regimen to safely delay your period without the need for additional medication.
If you experience persistent or bothersome side effects, contact your doctor. They may adjust your dose or recommend an alternative treatment.
Store at room temperature away from moisture and heat. Keep the medication out of reach of children and pets.
While Norethisterone is effective for short-term period delay, maintaining a healthy lifestyle can support overall menstrual health. Consider: Eating a balanced diet Regular exercise Managing stress Getting adequate sleep Always consult your doctor for personalized advice and before making any significant changes to your lifestyle or medication regimen.
