Frequently asked questions

What is Orlos (Orlistat) and how does it work?

Orlos is a weight loss medication that blocks the absorption of dietary fats by inhibiting the enzyme lipase in your intestines. This reduces the number of calories absorbed from fats, helping with weight loss when used alongside a low-calorie, low-fat diet.

Take Orlos exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider, typically one capsule with each main meal containing fat. Swallow the capsule whole with water during or up to one hour after the meal. If you skip a meal or eat a fat-free meal, you can skip the dose for that meal.

Orlos works best when combined with a reduced-calorie, low-fat diet. Aim to have your daily fat intake spread evenly across your meals, and avoid high-fat foods to minimize potential side effects like oily stools or diarrhoea.

Common side effects include gastrointestinal issues like oily or fatty stools, increased bowel movements, and occasional digestive discomfort. These side effects often lessen as your body adjusts to the medication. If side effects are severe or persistent, contact your healthcare provider.

Some medications, including certain vitamins and supplements, may interact with Orlos. It can reduce the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, and K), so a multivitamin supplement is recommended, taken at least 2 hours before or after Orlos. Always inform your healthcare provider about any other medications or supplements you are taking.

Your healthcare provider will guide the duration of your treatment based on your progress and health goals. Orlos is typically used for several months, but it should not be seen as a quick fix. Ongoing lifestyle changes are crucial for sustained weight loss.

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember unless it is close to the time of your next meal. Do not double up on doses to make up for the missed one.

Orlos is not suitable for everyone. It should not be taken by people with chronic malabsorption syndrome, cholestasis, or by those who are pregnant or breastfeeding. Always consult your healthcare provider to ensure Orlos is safe for you.

Weight loss results vary by individual, but clinical studies show that Orlos can help patients lose 5-10% of their body weight when combined with a proper diet and exercise program.

Maintaining weight loss after stopping Orlos depends on continuing healthy eating and exercise habits. The medication helps with weight loss, but long-term success requires lifestyle changes.
