Frequently asked questions

What is Valaciclovir?
Valaciclovir is an antiviral medication used to treat infections caused by certain types of viruses. It is commonly prescribed for managing genital herpes, cold sores, and shingles.
Valaciclovir works by inhibiting the replication of the herpes virus, thereby reducing the severity and duration of the infection. It helps to relieve symptoms and decreases the likelihood of spreading the virus to others.
Valaciclovir is effective in reducing the symptoms and duration of genital herpes outbreaks. It can also reduce the frequency of future outbreaks and the risk of transmitting the virus to a sexual partner when taken as suppressive therapy.
For an initial outbreak, Valaciclovir is typically taken twice a day for 10 days. For recurrent outbreaks, it should be taken as soon as you notice the first signs or symptoms, usually for 3-5 days. For suppressive therapy, it is taken once daily.
No, Valaciclovir cannot cure genital herpes. It helps manage the symptoms and reduce the frequency of outbreaks, but the virus remains in the body and can become active again.
Take Valaciclovir exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider. It is usually taken with or without food, with a full glass of water. Follow the dosing schedule closely to get the best results.
Common side effects include: Headache Nausea Stomach pain Vomiting Dizziness Less common but serious side effects can include: Kidney problems Changes in urine output Confusion or agitation (especially in older adults) Contact your healthcare provider if you experience any severe side effects.
If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, consult your healthcare provider before taking Valaciclovir. Your provider will weigh the potential benefits and risks to determine if it is safe for you.
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take two doses at once to make up for a missed dose.
Valaciclovir can reduce the risk of transmitting genital herpes to your partner, especially when taken as suppressive therapy. However, it is not a substitute for safe sex practices. Using condoms and avoiding sexual contact during outbreaks are also important measures to prevent transmission.
There are no direct interactions between Valaciclovir and alcohol. However, alcohol can weaken your immune system and may increase the likelihood of side effects. It's best to limit alcohol consumption while taking this medication.
Store Valaciclovir at room temperature, away from moisture and heat. Keep it in its original container, out of reach of children.
Valaciclovir may interact with certain medications, including: Probenecid Cimetidine Immunosuppressants like mycophenolate mofetil Inform your healthcare provider about all the medications you are taking to avoid potential interactions.
Valaciclovir should not be taken by individuals who are allergic to valaciclovir or acyclovir. People with certain kidney problems or conditions affecting the immune system should use this medication with caution and under medical supervision.
Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated, as Valaciclovir can affect kidney function. Follow your healthcare provider’s instructions and complete the full course of treatment. Inform your healthcare provider if you experience any unusual symptoms or if your condition does not improve.
