Frequently asked questions

What is ferrous fumarate used for?

It is used to treat and prevent iron deficiency anaemia.

They are suitable for adults and children aged 12 years and over, unless a doctor advises otherwise.

Take as directed on the packaging or by your healthcare professional. It is often taken on an empty stomach, but can be taken with food if it causes stomach upset.

Treatment usually continues for several months to rebuild iron stores, even after blood levels return to normal.

Common side effects include stomach upset, constipation, diarrhoea, nausea, or dark stools. These are usually harmless.

Iron can interact with some medicines, including antibiotics and antacids. Leave a gap between doses and check with a pharmacist if unsure.

Take it as soon as you remember, unless it is nearly time for your next dose. Do not take a double dose.

If symptoms persist, worsen, or you experience severe side effects, speak to your GP or pharmacist.
