Frequently asked questions

What is Levonelle?
Levonelle is an emergency contraceptive pill used to prevent pregnancy after unprotected sex or contraceptive failure. It contains levonorgestrel, a synthetic hormone similar to the natural hormone progesterone.
Levonelle works primarily by preventing or delaying ovulation (the release of an egg from the ovary). It may also make it more difficult for a fertilized egg to implant in the womb.
Levonelle is most effective when taken as soon as possible after unprotected sex. It is estimated to prevent: Up to 95% of pregnancies if taken within 24 hours Up to 85% if taken within 48 hours Up to 58% if taken within 72 hours (3 days) For treatments after 3 days please look at EllaOne
Levonelle should be taken as soon as possible after unprotected sex, ideally within 12 hours. It can be taken up to 72 hours (3 days) after, but its effectiveness decreases over time.
Yes, you can take Levonelle more than once in a menstrual cycle if necessary. However, it is not recommended as a regular form of contraception due to possible side effects and reduced effectiveness compared to regular contraceptive methods.
Take one Levonelle tablet with water as soon as possible after unprotected sex. It can be taken with or without food.
Nausea Fatigue Headache Dizziness Breast tenderness Irregular bleeding until your next period Vomiting (if you vomit within two hours of taking the pill, consult a healthcare provider as you may need to take another dose)
If you vomit within two hours of taking Levonelle, it may not be effective. Contact your healthcare provider; you may need to take another dose.
No, Levonelle is intended for emergency use only. It is not as effective as regular contraceptive methods and should not be used as a primary form of birth control.
No, Levonelle does not protect against STIs. Use condoms to reduce the risk of STIs.
If your period is more than seven days late, significantly lighter or heavier than usual, or if you experience unusual abdominal pain, take a pregnancy test and contact your healthcare provider.
Yes, Levonelle can be used while breastfeeding. Small amounts of levonorgestrel may pass into breast milk, but it is not harmful to the baby. Breastfeed before taking the pill to minimize the amount the baby receives.
Some medications may reduce the effectiveness of Levonelle. These include: Certain epilepsy medications Some HIV medications Some antibiotics (e.g., rifampicin, rifabutin) Herbal remedies containing St John's Wort
Individuals allergic to levonorgestrel or any other ingredient in the pill Those with severe liver disease Pregnant women (it will not terminate an existing pregnancy)
