Rizatriptan is a medication used to treat migraines. It works by narrowing blood vessels in the brain and reducing the release of substances that cause pain, nausea, and sensitivity to light and sound during a migraine.
Take Rizatriptan as soon as you notice the first signs of a migraine. It is most effective when taken early, but it can still help if taken later during the migraine attack. It is not intended for the treatment of other types of headaches.
Rizatriptan typically begins to relieve migraine symptoms within 30 to 60 minutes after taking it. If the migraine returns or if the symptoms persist, you may take a second dose, but no more than two doses should be taken in 24 hours.
Rizatriptan may interact with other medications, including some antidepressants and other migraine treatments. It's important to inform your healthcare provider about all medications you are taking, including over-the-counter drugs, vitamins, and supplements. Avoid taking Rizatriptan if you've used another triptan or ergotamine-containing medication within the last 24 hours.
Common side effects may include dizziness, drowsiness, fatigue, and dry mouth. These side effects are usually mild and temporary. If you experience severe side effects such as chest pain, irregular heartbeat, or difficulty breathing, seek medical attention immediately.
Rizatriptan is intended for acute treatment of migraines and should not be used for headache prevention. If you experience frequent migraines, consult your doctor to discuss a preventative treatment plan or alternative medications.
The safety of Rizatriptan during pregnancy or breastfeeding has not been fully established. If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, discuss with your healthcare provider before using Rizatriptan.
If Rizatriptan does not relieve your migraine, or if your migraines become more frequent or severe, consult your healthcare provider. They may need to adjust your treatment plan or explore other medication options.
Store Rizatriptan at room temperature, away from moisture, heat, and light. Keep the medication out of reach of children and pets.
Rizatriptan may cause drowsiness or dizziness, so it’s advisable to avoid driving or operating heavy machinery until you know how the medication affects you. If you experience these side effects, wait until they subside before engaging in such activities.
