Frequently asked questions

What is Trimethoprim?
Trimethoprim is an antibiotic commonly used to treat bacterial infections, including urinary tract infections (UTIs). It works by inhibiting the growth of bacteria.
Trimethoprim works by blocking the production of folic acid in bacteria, which is essential for their growth and reproduction. This helps eliminate the bacteria causing the infection.
Dosage: Follow your doctor’s prescription. The typical dose for a UTI is 200 mg twice daily. Duration: It is usually taken for 3 days. Complete the full course as prescribed. Administration: Take the medication with a full glass of water. It can be taken with or without food.
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it’s almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the next one at the regular time. Do not take two doses to make up for the missed one.
Nausea Vomiting Diarrhea Loss of appetite Skin rash These side effects are usually mild and temporary.
Serious side effects are rare but can include: Severe allergic reactions (rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, trouble breathing) Severe diarrhea (may be a sign of a new infection) Blood disorders (e.g., unusual bruising or bleeding, sore throat, fever) Seek immediate medical attention if you experience any of these symptoms.
Inform your prescriber about all medications you are taking, including over-the-counter drugs and supplements. Some medications can interact with Trimethoprim, including: Blood thinners (e.g., warfarin) Certain diuretics (water pills) Other antibiotics
Trimethoprim may not be suitable if you have: Severe kidney or liver disease Blood disorders (e.g., anemia) A history of allergic reactions to Trimethoprim or similar drugs Always consult your doctor to ensure Trimethoprim is safe for you, especially if you have any underlying health conditions.
It is generally safe to drink alcohol in moderation while taking Trimethoprim. However, alcohol can increase the risk of certain side effects, such as nausea and dizziness. Consult your doctor for personalized advice.
You may start to feel better within a few days of starting Trimethoprim. However, it’s important to complete the full course of treatment to ensure the infection is fully cleared and to prevent antibiotic resistance.
If you experience persistent or bothersome side effects, contact your doctor. They may adjust your dose or recommend an alternative treatment.
Store at room temperature away from moisture and heat. Keep the medication out of reach of children and pets.
Yes, along with taking Trimethoprim as prescribed, certain lifestyle changes can help prevent future UTIs: Drink plenty of water Urinate frequently and fully empty your bladder Wipe from front to back after using the toilet Avoid using irritating feminine products Wear cotton underwear and loose-fitting clothing Always consult your doctor for personalised advice and before making any significant changes to your lifestyle or medication regimen.
