Frequently asked questions

What is yellow fever?

Yellow fever is a viral infection spread by mosquitoes. It is found in parts of Africa, Central and South America. The disease can cause serious illness or death.

  • Travelers: Anyone traveling to areas where yellow fever is found.
  • Residents: People living in or moving to areas where yellow fever is common.
  • Laboratory staff: Those working with the yellow fever virus.
  • Infants under 6 months: Not recommended due to the risk of encephalitis.
  • Pregnant women: Unless travel is unavoidable and there's a significant risk of infection.
  • Breastfeeding mothers: If travel cannot be avoided, consider postponing vaccination.
  • People with severe allergies to egg proteins: The vaccine contains small amounts of egg proteins.
  • Individuals with weakened immune systems: This includes those with HIV/AIDS, undergoing chemotherapy, or on high-dose steroids.
  • People with a history of thymus disorder: Conditions like thymoma or myasthenia gravis.

The vaccine is given as a single injection, usually in the upper arm.

The vaccine should be administered at least 10 days before travel to allow immunity to develop.

A single dose of the yellow fever vaccine provides lifelong protection for most people.

  • Common side effects: Soreness at the injection site, mild fever, muscle aches.
  • Rare side effects: Severe allergic reactions, neurological conditions, and organ failure. Immediate medical attention is required if serious side effects occur.

For mild side effects, rest and hydration are usually sufficient. If you experience severe side effects, seek medical attention immediately.

Yes, an International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis (ICVP) is required as proof of vaccination for entry into some countries. The certificate is valid for life starting 10 days after vaccination.

Discuss with your healthcare provider, as they may recommend postponing the vaccine until after the procedure.

It’s best to get vaccinated at least 10 days before travel. In the UK, the vaccine is available at designated yellow fever vaccination centers.

While the vaccine is highly effective, no vaccine guarantees 100% protection. Continue to take precautions against mosquito bites.

If you cannot be vaccinated, you should avoid traveling to areas where yellow fever is common. If travel is unavoidable, obtain a medical waiver and take strict measures to prevent mosquito bites.
