Cetirizine is a non-drowsy antihistamine that works by blocking the effects of histamine, a substance released by the body during an allergic reaction. By reducing histamine activity, cetirizine helps relieve common allergy symptoms without causing significant sedation in most people.
It starts to work within about 1 hour and provides relief for up to 24 hours, making it suitable for once-daily dosing. Cetirizine is commonly used for seasonal allergies (hay fever), year-round allergies, and allergic skin conditions such as urticaria (hives).
Some people may still experience mild drowsiness. Alcohol should be avoided until you know how the medicine affects you.
