Co-Codamol 8/500mg Effervescent Tablets provide short-term relief from acute moderate pain when other painkillers such as paracetamol, ibuprofen or aspirin alone have not provided sufficient relief.
Each effervescent tablet contains:
- Paracetamol 500mg – helps relieve pain
- Codeine phosphate 8mg – an opioid painkiller that works alongside paracetamol to provide additional pain relief

Important: This medicine contains codeine and can cause addiction. It must only be used for a maximum of 3 days. Do not take any other medicines containing paracetamol while taking co-codamol.

Co-Codamol combines two pain-relieving medicines: paracetamol and codeine phosphate.
Paracetamol is a widely used analgesic that helps relieve pain. Codeine is an opioid analgesic which provides additional pain relief when simpler painkillers alone have not worked.
Co-codamol should only be used for acute moderate pain and only for a maximum of 3 days.
How to take Co-Codamol Effervescent Tablets
Dissolve the tablets completely in a glass of water before drinking.
Adults and elderly:
Take 2 tablets every 4 hours when necessary.
Do not take more than 8 tablets in any 24-hour period.
Leave at least 4 hours between doses.
What is Co-Codamol 8/500 used for?
It is used for the short-term treatment of acute moderate pain that has not been adequately relieved by simpler painkillers such as paracetamol or ibuprofen alone.
What does 8/500 mean?
Each tablet contains 8mg of codeine phosphate and 500mg of paracetamol.
Is Co-Codamol stronger than paracetamol?
Co-Codamol contains paracetamol together with the opioid painkiller codeine. It is intended for moderate pain where a non-opioid painkiller alone has not provided adequate relief.
How do I take the effervescent tablets?
Dissolve the required dose completely in a glass of water and drink the solution. Do not swallow the effervescent tablets whole.
How many Co-Codamol 8/500 tablets can an adult take?
For this product, adults and elderly patients can take 2 tablets every 4 hours when required, up to a maximum of 8 tablets in 24 hours. Never exceed the dose stated on the pack.
How long can I take Co-Codamol for?
A maximum of 3 days. If you still require pain relief after three days, speak to a doctor or pharmacist.
Can Co-Codamol cause addiction?
Yes. Co-Codamol contains codeine, which can cause dependence and addiction. The risk increases with prolonged use and higher doses. This is why pharmacy-strength codeine products are restricted to short-term use.
Can I take paracetamol with Co-Codamol?
No. Co-Codamol already contains 500mg of paracetamol per tablet. Do not take another medicine containing paracetamol at the same time.
