What is Colgate Duraphat Toothpaste?
Colgate Duraphat is a prescription-only, high-fluoride toothpaste containing sodium fluoride. It is available in two strengths:
- Duraphat 2800ppm: contains 0.619% sodium fluoride
- Duraphat 5000ppm: contains 1.1% sodium fluoride
Standard toothpaste generally contains around 1350ppm to 1500ppm fluoride. Duraphat provides a higher concentration for people who are at increased risk of developing tooth decay.
What is Duraphat used for?
Duraphat can help prevent and treat dental caries affecting the tooth crown or exposed roots. It may be recommended for people who:
- Experience frequent tooth decay
- Have previously had multiple fillings or cavities
- Have exposed tooth roots
- Wear braces or other orthodontic appliances
- Have a dry mouth
- Take medicines that reduce saliva production
- Have a diet or medical condition that increases their risk of tooth decay
- Have been advised to use high-fluoride toothpaste by a dentist
How does Duraphat work?
Fluoride helps protect teeth by:
- Reducing the loss of minerals from tooth enamel
- Supporting the remineralisation and strengthening of enamel
- Making teeth more resistant to acid produced by plaque bacteria
- Helping protect exposed dentine and tooth roots from decay
Duraphat should replace your normal toothpaste while you are using it.
How to use Duraphat 2800ppm
Unless your dentist or prescriber tells you otherwise:
- Apply a 1cm ribbon of toothpaste to your toothbrush.
- Brush carefully for approximately one minute, morning and evening.
- Brush vertically from the gum towards the tip of each tooth.
- Spit out after brushing.
- Do not swallow the toothpaste.
- For the best results, do not rinse your mouth, eat or drink for 30 minutes after brushing.
Duraphat 2800ppm must not be used by children under 10 years of age.
How to use Duraphat 5000ppm
Unless your dentist or prescriber tells you otherwise:
- Apply a 2cm ribbon of toothpaste to your toothbrush.
- Brush carefully for approximately three minutes.
- Use three times daily, preferably after meals.
- Brush vertically from the gum towards the tip of each tooth.
- Spit out after brushing.
- Do not swallow the toothpaste.
Duraphat 5000ppm must not be used by anyone under 16 years of age.
Important safety information
Do not use Duraphat if you are allergic to sodium fluoride or any other ingredient in the toothpaste.
Speak to your dentist, pharmacist or prescriber before use if you:
- Use fluoride tablets, drops, mouth rinses, gels, varnishes or other high-fluoride products
- Receive fluoride from another prescribed source
- Have difficulty swallowing
- Are pregnant or breastfeeding
- Have been told that you have an intolerance to any of the ingredients
Duraphat 5000ppm has a particularly high fluoride content. Your overall fluoride intake should be assessed before it is used.
Use only the recommended amount and keep the toothpaste out of the sight and reach of children.
Possible side effects
Side effects are uncommon but can include:
- A burning sensation in the mouth
- Irritation inside the mouth
- Rare allergic reactions
Stop using the toothpaste and seek medical advice if you experience swelling, a severe rash, difficulty breathing or another sign of a serious allergic reaction.

How often should I use Duraphat?
Duraphat 2800ppm is normally used twice daily, morning and evening. Duraphat 5000ppm is normally used three times daily, preferably after meals. Follow the directions provided by your dentist, prescriber and patient information leaflet.
Should Duraphat replace my normal toothpaste?
Yes. Duraphat should normally be used instead of your usual toothpaste while prescribed. Do not use additional high-fluoride products unless advised by a dental or healthcare professional.
Should I rinse after using Duraphat?
Spit out the toothpaste after brushing and do not swallow it. For Duraphat 2800ppm, do not rinse, eat or drink for 30 minutes after brushing. Follow the instructions supplied with your selected strength.
Can children use Duraphat Toothpaste?
