Warnings and Precautions

Do not take Nytol if you:

  • Are allergic to diphenhydramine or any of the ingredients
  • Have narrow-angle glaucoma or prostate enlargement
  • Have severe liver, kidney or respiratory disease
  • Are taking other medicines that cause drowsiness, contain diphenhydramine, or have anticholinergic effects

Use with caution if you are elderly, as there is a greater risk of confusion, drowsiness or falls.

Avoid alcohol while taking this medicine.

Do not drive or operate machinery after taking Nytol.

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, speak to your doctor or pharmacist before use.

If symptoms persist, or if sleeplessness continues for more than two weeks, seek medical advice.

What is Nytol used for?

Nytol is used for the short-term relief of temporary sleeplessness. It helps you fall asleep when you are having difficulty sleeping, such as during times of stress or change in routine.

Nytol contains diphenhydramine hydrochloride, an antihistamine that causes drowsiness by reducing activity in the brain, helping you to fall asleep more easily.

It usually starts to make you feel sleepy within 20 to 30 minutes after taking the tablet.

Nytol is intended for short-term use only. If you continue to have trouble sleeping for more than two weeks, speak to your doctor or pharmacist for further advice.

Do not take Nytol with alcohol or other medicines that can cause drowsiness. Check with your pharmacist before using it if you take other medicines, including those for allergies, coughs, depression, or anxiety.

Some people may still feel drowsy the following morning. If this happens, avoid driving or using machinery until you feel fully alert.

Nytol does not contain addictive substances, but your body can become used to it if taken for long periods. For this reason, it should only be used occasionally and for short periods.

Avoid taking Nytol with other sleep aids or sedatives, including herbal products such as valerian, without medical advice.
